Barcelona coach Xavi is shocked to miss out on a golden opportunity to move up to second place in La Liga.

Barca beat Cadiz 1-0 for the first time since April 2003 after being relegated from the Europa League at home to Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday.

Lucas Perez's second-half winning goal has seen them concede 32 goals in 31 league games this season, their worst tally in 33 seasons since the 2012-13 season.

Barcelona are unbeaten in 15 league games and have struggled to reach the knockout stages, but now have just seven games left to catch up with Real Madrid.

In fact, Barca's main focus will be on the teams below them. Atletico Madrid and Sevilla are level on 60 points, as are Blagrana, but Real Betis (57) and Real Sociedad (55) are not far behind.

"We are off," Xavi told reporters. "We have lost the golden opportunity to stay out of the Champions League and continue to fight for the title. We are about to say goodbye to La Liga.

"We Barca have to do more than that. The teams should show more enthusiasm. The players want it. We need competition, not reason.

"They (Cadiz) defended the game as they did last time and we fit in.

"We have to be humble and think we have not done anything yet. To be in the Champions League next year, we have to be more confident and determined to drive. We have to grind a lot. Shares."

Despite overseeing his fortunes since taking office, Xavi said the defeat showed Barca needed more work to get back to his playing days.

"It makes sense to say 'we're back in' 4-0 win over Bernabeu, but now we're making mistakes too," he said.

"We have to judge ourselves and respond to the Champions League goal.

"We have to work to get back to the great Barca. We have played two good games, beating Real Madrid and Sevilla with the same teammates and the same staff. If we were done before, we could do it again."

The game was played in a quiet atmosphere after a prominent Blaugrana fan group boycotted the club's handling of last week's defeat to Frankfurt last week, when some 30,000 away fans signed up for the tournament.

"We need our people," Xavi said. "It only hurt us a lot yesterday and the fans were amazing.

"I hope they will be with us in the next game. Barcelona must unite and go to the Champions League at least next year. What a shame. We all need it. Three home games are important at home. The points stay here. "
